The Minister of Economy and Labor Besar Durmshi meets with CAML leadership: Joint steps for sustainable development with a focus on jobs

The Minister of Economy and Labor, Besar Durmshi, held a working meeting today with the CEO of “Central Asia Metals” (CAML), Gavin Ferrar. The meeting was also attended by the Sustainability Director of Rudnik SASA, Ivica Talevski.

The discussions focused on the current development of the "SASA" mining complex, which is one of the most significant companies in the mining industry in the country, as well as plans for further investments and the application of international standards in sustainable operations.

CAML is in the process of completing a multi-year capital investment program at SASA, totaling approximately USD47 million. This program aims to introduce new mining methods and align mineral waste disposal with international best practices.

The company's management informed Minister Durmshi about the results of operations so far and the potential for further growth, including in the area of ​​environmental protection and improving the working conditions of employees. It was emphasized that creating favorable conditions for further sustainable development of the mine and its contribution to local economic development in Makedonska Kamenica remain the company's top priority.

Minister Durmshi emphasized the Government's support for all investors who demonstrate long-term vision and responsibility towards the local community.

"With successful investments like this, we strengthen the economy, provide conditions for stable jobs and send a clear message that North Macedonia is a safe and attractive investment destination. For us as a Ministry and the Government, every job means a better standard for citizens," the Minister said.

At the meeting, the interlocutors agreed that it is crucial to continue cooperation towards the development of the mining industry while respecting the highest standards for worker health and safety, as well as environmental protection.

 Central Asia Metals is a company listed on the London Stock Exchange and has owned the SASA lead and zinc mine in Makedonska Kamenica since November 2017, where around 800 employees work, and on average salaries are approximately 60 percent higher than the average salary paid in the country. Since the beginning of the investment to date, the company has paid USD95.5 million in taxes, invested over USD80 million in the development of SASA and has additionally invested over USD2.4 million in the local community.
